    How it works

    How advertising inside ChatGPT works

A ChatGPT ad is not triggered by a keyword but by a conversation. The person explains what they want, ChatGPT answers, and below the answer a sponsored card offers your service if it matches the context. You provide context hints, a title, copy, an image and a landing page; OpenAI picks the ad through a relevance-weighted second-price auction. Ads run on a system separate from the model: they never change what ChatGPT answers.

    1. 01

      The question

A Free or Go user describes what they need: an evening class, a tradesperson, a weekend away, a course. They give context and constraints, not three keywords.

    2. 02

      The answer

ChatGPT answers as usual. Ads run on a separate system: they influence neither the content, nor the order, nor the tone of the answer.

    3. 03

      The sponsored card

Below the answer, a card labelled "sponsored" offers your service when your context hints, title, copy and landing page match. Second-price auction, weighted by relevance.

    Timeline

Seven months from the first test to Swiss SMEs getting in

OpenAI tested ads in the United States in February 2026, opened a self-serve Ads Manager in May, then announced 31 European markets on 18 August. Swiss businesses have been able to create their account since 31 August. This is when a channel is cheap to enter: few Swiss-French advertisers, a second-price auction, and time to learn before the competition shows up.

    Audience

Who sees your ads inside ChatGPT, plan by plan

Ads only appear for users on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu subscribers never see a sponsored card, nor do users under 18. This detail decides everything: a consumer offer speaks to a very wide audience, a B2B offer often targets decision-makers who pay for an ad-free plan.

A 30-day pilot measures exactly how much audience is left for your business, before any budget decision.

    Comparison

Google Ads or ChatGPT Ads: which one for your Swiss SME?

The two channels do not replace each other. Google captures demand already phrased as keywords, ChatGPT captures demand taking shape inside a conversation. Here is what changes, criterion by criterion, with DKDP's recommendation.

    What triggers the ad
Google AdsKeywords typed into a search bar.
ChatGPT AdsA conversation: the need, the context, the constraints, written in sentences.
    Format
Google AdsText ads, Shopping, Display, YouTube, Performance Max.
ChatGPT AdsOne sponsored card below the answer: name, favicon, title, copy, image, link.
    Targeting
Google AdsKeywords, audiences, city or radius, device, schedule.
ChatGPT AdsCountry, platform, context hints, customer lists from 25'000 contacts. City targeting not guaranteed in Switzerland.
    Bidding
Google AdsCPC, target CPA, target ROAS, maximise conversions.
ChatGPT AdsReach (CPM), Clicks (CPC), conversion optimisation. Recommended starting CPC: 3 to 5 USD.
    Measurement
Google AdsGoogle conversions, GA4, calls, offline import.
ChatGPT AdsAds Manager reports, OpenAI Pixel, Conversions API, UTM parameters.
    Personalisation in Switzerland
Google AdsGoogle history and signals, subject to consent.
ChatGPT AdsNone at launch: only the current conversation counts.
    Maturity
Google AdsOver twenty years, benchmarks per industry.
ChatGPT AdsSeven months of testing, no benchmark published by OpenAI.
    When DKDP recommends it
Google AdsExpressed demand: someone is already looking for your service.
ChatGPT AdsDemand taking shape: someone compares, hesitates, explores.

Both together, one report: that is the Google Ads + ChatGPT Ads plan, further down this page.

    Simulator

    Estimate your ChatGPT Ads budget

Set your monthly media budget, the cost-per-click range you assume and the share of clicks that become a contact. The simulator returns a range, never a promise: OpenAI publishes no benchmark, and the channel is less than a year old in Switzerland.

    CHF 1'000 per month
    CHF 2.50
    CHF 4.00

OpenAI recommends starting between 3 and 5 USD per click. Set the range in francs according to the day's rate.

    3 %

A submitted form, a call, a booking. A fast site and a precise landing page weigh more than the ad itself.

    Estimated clicks

    250 to 400

    per month

    Estimated contacts

    7 to 12

    per month

    Cost per contact

    CHF 83 to 143

    per month

    Indicative estimate, not a promise

Method: clicks = budget divided by CPC; contacts = clicks multiplied by the rate; cost per contact = budget divided by contacts. The real CPC depends on the bid, the competition and the relevance judged by OpenAI.

    Who it is for

Which businesses ChatGPT Ads works for in Geneva and French-speaking Switzerland

During its test period, OpenAI mainly accepts consumer categories: household goods, local services, travel and experiences, digital products and education. Regulated industries are either prohibited or subject to manual approval. DKDP checks your eligibility before you open an account.

The right candidate has a clear offer, a precise landing page and a simple way to convert: book, call, order, sign up.

ChatGPT Ads for Swiss SMEs: retail, restaurants, local services, tourism and training, the industries that work in Geneva and French-speaking Switzerland in 2026

    It works

    Retail and e-commerce

A Carouge boutique that also sells online: the card shows up when someone compares products, looks for a gift idea or asks where to buy nearby.

    Local services

Tradespeople, gyms, hair salons, garages, opticians: the moment someone asks "who should I contact in Geneva for…" and names their neighbourhood.

    Hotels, restaurants, tourism

A weekend in Montreux, a birthday table in Lausanne, something to do on a rainy Sunday: conversations that end with a booking.

    Training and digital products

Courses, workshops, software, subscriptions: the person explains their goal and level, and the card answers that exact moment.

Not yet, or subject to approval

    Finance, health, legal

Allowed case by case in the United States only. Outside the US, OpenAI describes them as generally prohibited. We do not sell this channel to a bank, a medical practice or a law firm without prior approval from OpenAI.

Alcohol, gambling, politics, jobs and housing

Prohibited by OpenAI's ad policies (version of 31 August 2026), including individual job or housing listings. A listings platform remains possible as long as no specific listing is referenced.

    B2B: test with care

Decision-makers often sit on Plus, Business or Enterprise, plans without ads. The channel can still reach freelancers and small firms; a 30-day pilot settles it.

    Method

Our ChatGPT Ads method in 5 steps

The same rigour as on Google Ads, adapted to OpenAI's rules: the account belongs to you, measurement is set up before the first card, and nothing is committed beyond the pilot without a report.

    1. 01

      Scoping and eligibility

Category allowed by OpenAI, relevant landing page, OAI-AdsBot and OAI-SearchBot not blocked, a numbered goal before the first franc.

    2. 02

      Account and measurement

You create the Ads Manager account in your name, DKDP is invited. OpenAI Pixel and Conversions API, UTM parameters, consent banner in line with Swiss data protection law: the same setup DKDP runs on its own site.

    3. 03

      Cards and context hints

Six to eight title and copy variations per offer, each with a different angle. French first, German if you sell across the Sarine.

    4. 04

      30-day pilot

Clicks objective, starting bid between 3 and 5 USD as OpenAI recommends, weekly adjustments, media budget between CHF 600 and 1'500.

    5. 05

      Decision and scale-up

End-of-pilot report: spent, clicked, converted, cost per contact. Go or no-go, then monthly management and conversion optimisation.

    Pricing

ChatGPT Ads management pricing: clear, no commission

Your media budget goes 100% to OpenAI, on your account. DKDP only bills the management, and always starts with a pilot.

    Data

Data, privacy and Swiss data protection: what really happens

One question comes up at every scoping call: “what about my customers' conversations?”. Here are OpenAI's rules as they apply in Switzerland, and what DKDP sets up on your side.

    Your conversation is never shared

OpenAI shares neither conversations, nor history, nor memory with the advertiser. DKDP only receives aggregated figures: impressions, clicks, conversions.

    No ads near sensitive topics

Health, mental health, politics, distress: OpenAI places no ads there. Your brand does not show up in a conversation where it would look out of place.

    The pixel is a tracker

The OpenAI Pixel sets a cookie on your site. It therefore goes through your consent banner, in line with Swiss data protection law. DKDP wires it to your cookie management, or uses the server-side Conversions API.

    Our GDPR and cookies service

    No personalisation in Switzerland

At launch, neither history nor memory is used to pick an ad in Switzerland and the EEA. Only the current conversation counts: your cards have to work on the first read.

ChatGPT Ads French-speaking Switzerland: the Lake Geneva arc from Geneva to Montreux, the cities covered by the DKDP agency for advertising inside ChatGPT

ChatGPT Ads in Geneva, Lausanne and across French-speaking Switzerland

Ads Manager targets by country first, and city targeting is not guaranteed in Switzerland. To reach Geneva or French-speaking Switzerland, DKDP works on what matters inside a conversation: cards written in French, a message that names your city or neighbourhood, a local landing page and context hints that describe what your Swiss-French customers ask for.

Selling across the Sarine too? DKDP prepares German cards in a separate ad group, with its own context hints.

Agency based in Eaux-Vives, Geneva. Working across French-speaking Switzerland.
